Cash Gift-Giving at a Wedding….?

What is the correct etiquette for cash gift giving at a wedding when you bring a date who does not know the couple getting married?

My date is my boyfriend of a year. I know the typical “proper” cash gift is ~$100 per person, and I think that’s a lot to give someone as a gift who you don’t even know so I feel like it’s not right for him to do that. But at the same time, that’s a ton of money for me to shell out at each of these weddings. What’s the right thing to do??

Where I am from (the northeast) $100 is a normal cash gift per person at a wedding.
If your boyfriend doesn’t know the couple, but is still attending either you should give $100 from you (thus he is technically not giving a gift) or increase the gift and have it be from both of you.
When budgets are tight, I have given $150 from myself + date at a wedding.
