What tests and shots are really necessary for an indoor cat?
I’ve had Simon for 9 yrs & I was a bad girl – never took him to the vet. Finally came to my senses (and saved up some cash) & took him in. They were very nice, but gave him a bunch of tests & vaccines that they didn’t tell me about ahead of time, & I had to use Christmas gift fund to pay the ridiculous bill. In the future, I know to go in with specific instructions of what I will & will not pay for/allow.
My question is If I have a limited budget, & I’m the type of person who believes most doctors including vets will treat patients for everything under the sun whether it’s needed or not, what is necessary? Rabies vaccine is required in NY, & it sounds like distemper vaccine is important. But I think it’s silly to vaccinate an older cat who has never gotten out in 9 years for something (leuk) there’s a 1 in a million chance might happen. Especially with all the tumor issues that are showing up. They also tested him for parasites and Giardia. He had no symptoms of anything. Thoughts?
Our 11 year old kitties were born inside and have never, ever been outdoor cats. Aside from having them all spayed and neutered, they’ve never had a need to go to the vet.
They are happy, healthy cats…if any one of them ever showed a problem or illness, I wouldn’t’t hesitate to get them medical help….but, I really don’t see ANY sense in giving them a bunch of inoculations for encounters or diseases they will never be exposed to.
What are the odds of a rabid raccoon coming in and fighting with them?
Other than giving them their (Feline Advantage) flea treatments regularly throughout the summer months, which is also a big expense…that’s about it <:O)
Now, our dog is another story...there are certain shots required by law...so, when we had him neutered, he got all of the necessary shots. He’s also an indoor pet, goes out into a fenced in yard or we walk him on a leash. We keep him on the Canine Advantage flea treatments...treat the yard with diatomaceous earth...and we’re flea free.

This site spells out all the vaccines a can MAY need...but I couldn’t find any information about ’required inoculations’ for cats in NY.
